Google Nexus S Camera Review (Pictures + Videos) | Maxis 10

The Google Nexus S comes with 5 Megapixels auto focus camera with LED flash. I must admit that Nexus S camera is performing beyond my expectation with its high quality still images and videos. Another good thing about Nexus S camera is it comes with front-facing VGA camera for video chat. That means I don’t have to switch back and forth to take my own profile photo.

Basically, the camera image settings consist of Select Camera option (Back or Front), Flash Mode (Auto, On, Off),   White Balance settings (Auto, Incandescent, Daylight, Fluorescent, Cloudy), Store location (On, Off), Focus Mode (Auto, Infinity, Macro) and Exposure (+2, +1, 0).

For the video settings, you can adjust video quality ( High, Low, MMS, YouTube) and color effect (None, Mono, Sepia, Negative). The highest video resolution you can get from Nexus S is 720 X 480, not bad at all!

Photos below were taken using Auto-Focus and Daylight Mode. All the images had been resized to smaller resolution for better viewing (their original image resolution is 2560 X 1920). If you want to view the original images, click here to download.

All the below short videos were taken using Auto & Daylight Mode without flash. Watch out, for the food video I had used two effects: Auto mode then Daylight mode. See if you could notice any differences between the two?

Conclusion:

Overall, I'm quite satisfied with how Nexus S is handling both the photos and video-shooting. Comparing to most mobile devices it performs rather well, I’m sure you’ll agree with me after seeing the examples above. Honestly, I just feel that if Nexus S could add in some more features such as ‘zooming’ and external shutter button instead of internal then that would be awesome. But that’s just my opinion. 7 Tips to Save Google Nexus S Battery Power | Maxis10

Posted: 04 Apr 2011 05:50 AM PDT

In the previous post, I had walked you through various types of exciting Android games and I believe you had also witnessed how powerful Nexus S processor performed in the video. One of the readers had left a comment asking me about the battery life of Nexus S. Therefore, today I will be sharing some useful battery saving tips here to help you conserve more battery power.

youtube comment

Although the battery manufacturer claims that the Nexus S phone allows you to talk for almost 7 hours (using 3G network), but in real life it's quite impossible to gauge based on just that. We all use our mobile device differently. Besides, some of you may love multitasking and that could affect the battery life too! Actually with just a few phone settings, you can easily conserve 'Extra' battery life so Nexus S could last longer.

First of all, bear in mind that if you want to ensure the maximum of your battery life: Avoid charging batteries for more than a week, as overcharging may shorten battery life. Secondly, always monitor your usage so to know which programs or apps are consuming most of your battery power. Luckily, Nexus S provides an informative screen on battery use info which can be found here:

Choose settings –> About Phone –> Battery Use

battery usage info

The information clearly outlines which applications are consuming the most battery power and if possible, reduce the usage of those apps as much as possible. I had personally tried out all the methods below and they did help!  I was managed to extend the original 6 hours of playing Android games (without customization) to almost 12 hours (after customization)!

1) Always Put the Phone in Snooze Mode

Snooze the phone manually

Whenever you are not using the phone, press briefly at the power button to turn off phone display. Even the phone is snoozing, it is still pretty much alive and you can still receive calls or incoming messages.

Snooze the phone automatically

Google Nexus S has a built-in screen timeout feature which will automatically turn off the screen after a period of inactivity. You can control the timeout setting and set the value in between 15 seconds to 30 minutes. It's advisable to keep the value at 1 minute or less (if possible) to save more battery power.

How to: Go to Settings –> Display –> Screen timeout –> Select timeout value (15 seconds, 30 seconds, 1 minute, 2 minutes, 10 minutes, 30 minutes)

2) Manage Power Usage From Power Control Widget

Thanks to the default Power Control Widget pre-installed on Google Nexus S. I can easily manage all important power usage right from the home screen as shown in the screenshot. Don't underestimate these controls, if you turn off the unused app this will greatly help in conserving your battery power.

i) Set the screen brightness to minimum level

Even with the lowest screen brightness setting, the screen display will still be visible if you are using Nexus S indoor. The device may set the brightness to 'auto' by default so you need to check it yourself. Reduce the brightness whenever necessary contributes much in power-saving.

How to: Set screen brightness using Power Control widget available on homepage. Just touch the brightness button to change screen brightness. Otherwise, go to settings –> Display –> Brightness

ii)                   Turn off Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and GPS (Global Positioning System) will conserve more battery power as they require extra power to run wireless connectivity.  Therefore, disconnect them as soon as you are out of the WiFi zone.

iii)                 Turn off Automatic Syncing and background data to save battery life as the phone will stop syncing and updating data (send and receive) in the background automatically.

You can touch Auto-Sync button to disable Automatic Syncing or go to Settings –> Accounts & Sync –> uncheck both Background Data and Auto-sync

iv)                 Turn off NFC (Near Field Communication) as it’s still a new technology and not widely use by people. Go to settings –>Wireless & networks –> Uncheck NFC

3)      Turn off Phone's Vibration

Disabling vibration option will also save battery life. Follow these steps to turn off the vibration option.

How to: Settings –> Sound –> Vibrate –> Never

vibrate settings

You can also uncheck Haptic Feedback option to stop the phone to vibrate when you press the soft buttons and on certain UI interactions.

4) Make sure Your Phone System is Updated

Normally, latest system updates will fix some error bugs, hence improve battery life and performances. Therefore, always keep your current phone system updated. You can check the system update info as below:

Settings –> About Phone –> System Updates

system updates

5) Reduce 3G Usage

For your info, 3G network provides faster network and therefore, it consumes more battery power comparing to other slower network such as 2G or EDGE. Switch to 2G to save battery:

How to: Settings –> Wireless & Networks –> Mobile Networks –> check the option Use Only 2G Networks.

6) Use Static Image instead of Live Wallpaper

I know live wallpapers are beautiful and interactive but it will not help you to conserve battery power. So whenever you are in need of saving extra power, make sure to switch to static wallpaper. Just tap anywhere on your home screen for a few seconds and the below menu will appear for your wallpaper options:

select wallpaper

7) Disable unused Phone and App Services

There are some phone and app services running at the background and they are actually slowing down your device. You can install a free Android app from Android Market called Advanced Task Killer Program to halt programs that run in the background or no longer in use. This will not only free up your memory resources, but also improves the battery power.

Extra : How to turn off all wireless & cellular connection in one go?

Activate AirPlane Mode will disable all wireless connections and data network at once. But be careful with this option because it will not allow you to have incoming or outgoing calls/messages too.

How to: Press and hold the power button, then choose Airplane Mode.
